Whole Grain Boost

10,000 students in VGR are eating more whole grains!
Through FullkornsLyftet, 10,000 students in VGR will have the opportunity to eat more whole grains during March 2026!
During the fall of 2025, FullkornsFrämjandet (Whole Grain Promotion) contributed with training and workshops on whole grains for meal planners, chefs, and kitchen staff working in 20 schools around Västra Götaland, from Borås to Lilla Edet. After that, each participating kitchen planned a menu with more whole grains. The goal is to offer students an average of 27 grams of whole grains per day in March 2026. This is in line with the Swedish Food Agency's guidelines for school meals regarding whole grains on the school menu.
TO BE ABLE TO DO MORE
"To have more energy during the day" is the main reason young people choose whole grains, according to the Youth Barometer 2026, in which 1,210 young people aged 15-24 answered questions about whole grains. With this in mind, FullkornsFrämjandet has produced supporting communication material in the form of posters, table tents, and digital devices that focus on how whole grains help recharge batteries to keep going throughout the school day.

Whole grains for better stomach health
Other reasons young people see for eating more whole grains are to improve their digestive health and stay healthy. In the survey, the oldest young people (aged 23–24) were more likely to say they wanted to eat more whole grains for better digestive health than the youngest (aged 15–16).
Among older people, 47% considered stomach health to be an important reason, compared to 30% among younger people. The average was 38%. It also shows that girls are more interested in stomach health than boys, with 45% of girls considering it important, compared to 32% of boys.
Eating enough whole grains is incredibly important for both stomach health and overall health. In the information material for schools, we have highlighted how whole grains boost the entire body. The brain, heart, stomach, and intestines all benefit from eating a varied selection of whole grain products.

In addition to explaining why whole grains are important, there are also clear and inspiring examples of how much 90 grams of whole grains is. 95% of young people are positive about eating whole grains. Soft bread with whole grains and oatmeal porridge are at the top of the list of whole grain products that young people prefer.
By making it clear how much whole grain different components contribute, it becomes easy for both young people and adults to take action and really eat more whole grain.
