90 GRAMS OF WHOLE GRAINS A DAY

Many people wonder where to find whole grains to get enough. According to the updated Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR 2023), adults should eat 90 grams of whole grains per day. The NNR 2023 have been developed by hundreds of researchers and reviewed by dietitians, nutritionists, doctors and other experts across the Nordic region.

According to the latest food habits survey in Sweden, adults eat an average of 42 grams of whole grains per day*, which means that we need to more than double our intake of whole grains to reach an average of 90 grams per day. Only 1 in 10 people in Sweden eat 90 grams of whole grains per day. We need to learn more about whole grains, where to find whole grains and how to create good habits to get whole grains.

WHOLE GRAINS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Whole grains are only found in cereals and in our part of the world mainly in our four cereals; wheat, rye, barley and oats, but also in rice and maize (read more about what whole grains are here). This means that wholemeal bread, porridge and muesli, for example, are good sources of wholegrain in everyday life.

Traditional crispbread made from rye contains pure wholemeal flour and is therefore 100% wholemeal. Oats are always 100% whole grain, as the whole grain is used to make oatmeal and oat flour, for example. The most common flour in Sweden - white wheat flour - is made only from the wheat's seed white, which means that important parts of the grain have been sifted out. Wholegrain is also found in, for example, wholegrain pasta, food wheat and wholegrain bulgur.
